About Alaleh

My name is Alaleh Shakourianfard, and I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). I received my Master’s of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University in 2016, and my Honours Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from York University in 2013.

In my practice, I support individuals that are experiencing difficult life situations and transitions, leading to stress, anxiety, and depression. I provide a safe space for clients to explore themselves and help them develop new insights and skills.

My Experience

My experience has provided me with a wide range of knowledge, which includes providing therapy and facilitating groups with youth and with women experiencing trauma.

My previous experience includes providing treatments to clients in both private practice and community programs.

I like to take a client-centered, collaborative and integrative approach to my work, drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Narrative Therapy.

Stress

Stress is a response to environmental pressures or demands, especially in a situation where we feel a threat or a danger to our well-being. It can also occur when pressures or demands on placed on us. Symptoms of stress can be felt physically (i.e. headaches), emotionally (i.e. irritability) or cognitively (i.e. difficulty concentrating). Although experiencing some level of stress is a normal part of life, prolonged stress can lead to physical and psychological problems.

Trauma

Trauma is the emotional response when a negative event is overwhelming. These negative events could be physical, psychological or sexual in nature, Trauma can affect how a personal feels, their ability to have satisfying relationships with others, the body, how they think and how they behave. When thoughts and memories of the negative event don’t go away or becomes worse, it may lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can cause serious disruption to a person’s life.

Depression

Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression causes feelings of sadness, as well as a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function both at work and at home.

Anxiety

Anxiety occurs when we think and act in an apprehensive manner when we worry about an event or a situation. It is a state of uneasiness when we worry. It is normal to experience anxiety occasionally. However, it turns into a disorder, which is a disruption to normal functioning when the anxiety starts to interfere with a normal lifestyle.

Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is made up of the thoughts, feelings, and opinions we have about ourselves. It is the feeling we have about all the things we see ourselves to be. It is the knowledge that we are lovable, capable, and unique. Self-esteem is being able to see all your abilities and weaknesses together, accepting them, and doing your best with what you have.
